 Ed ViestursEd will be autographing copies of his book, No Shortcuts to the Top, on Saturday afternoon. As a University of Washington student, Ed recalls being able to see Mt. Rainier from his dorm room window. Since his college days, Ed has accumulated over 187 trips to the summit of Rainier, many of them while guiding for Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. Currently residing in Bainbridge Island, WA with his wife Paula and their three children, Ed has become regarding as the country’s foremost high altitude mountaineer. He is familiar to many from the 1996 IMAX Everest Expedition documentary. He has received numerous industry awards including the historic Lowell Thomas Award by the Explorer’s Club in 2002 for outstanding achievement in the field of mountaineering. In winning the award he joined an elite group of climbers including Sir Edmund Hillary. In 1992 he was awarded the American Alpine Club Sowles Award for his participation in two rescues on K-2. Ed continues to inspire those involved in mountaineering and the corporate world as a sought after public speaker. Ed covers topics such as teamwork, overcoming major obstacles, and planning and preparation. He also acts as a spokesperson for companies like Rolex and Cisco systems. His greatest achievement to date was his recent completion of his goal to climb the world’s fourteen 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen. The project, dubbed Endeavor 8000 by Viesturs, spanned 18 years and was completed on May 12, 2005 with his ascent of Annapurna, one of the world’s most treacherous peaks. Ed is one of only a handful of others, and the only American to accomplish this major feat. Ed documented this quest, along with his many other high altitude adventures in his best-selling book No Shortcuts to the Top.
